Memorial Day (or Decoration Day as it was officially called until 1882) is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, will be held on May 28, 2018. (The holiday was previously held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970 and is Different from Veterans Day or Armed Forces Day) Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honour those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.
It also marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season (while Labour Day marks its end)
