New Road didn’t give their audience much chance to catch breath between numbers in this high octane traditional Irish gig.
This five piece band delighted the Saint Andrews In The Square audience with their virtuoso playing of whistles, Uilleann pipes, concertina, fiddle, guitar and harmonica, not to forget the Jew’s harp.
The occasional vocals concentrated mainly on American old time with a special mention of their stripped back version of Jagger and Richards’s ‘No Expectations’. But it was their instrumental work which comprised the bulk of the show as they effortlessly rolled through the gamut of traditional Irish sounds.
The opening slot hailed for across the North Sea in the shape of the Norwegian band, The Erlend Viken Trio on cello, guitar and fiddle.
Their encore winning performance encaptivated the audience showing the numerous similarities in and differences between Celtic and Scandinavian folk music which continually veers off into its own unexpected directions.
