Review of Dervish 19th Jan at Celtic Connection by Danny Matheson
Dervish are an eight-piece band from Sligo in Ireland and they have been around for over 30 years. Led wonderfully by Cathy Jordan, who has the typical Irish craic and a fantastic voice, they were a joy to listen to.
The concert was billed as “The Great Irish Songbook” and it did exactly as it says on the ticket. This is a collection of well known and popular Irish songs and tunes including “May Morning Dew”; Maggie’s Lilt”; “Belfast Child” and “The Rambling Irishman.”
They were all played and sung beautifully.
As if having Dervish on stage wasn’t enough they were joined by some very special guests, reading like a who’s who of folk music – Heidi Talbot, Brian Kennedy, Bela Flek, Abigail Washburn and the inimitable Peggy Seeger.
This was a glorious night of music. The appreciative audience left the gig singing along to “The Galway Shawl” and ” The Parting Glass,” the last two songs of the night.
The Great Irish Songbook is the latest Dervish album and I reckon it is well worth buying
