Our Album of the week from Saturday 11 June is Ebb ‘n’ Flow from Noriana Kennedy.
Noriana Kennedy has been an in-demand folk singer and musician in Galway for over five years, and is beginning to generate a buzz nationally with her debut album Ebb ‘N’Flow. Her musical career began in 2005 as lead singer of Irish contemporary trad band Nábac. The five-piece performed regularly in Ireland’s well known folk venues and at music festivals such as the Electric Picnic and The Galway Volvo Ocean Race Festival. Their spirited performances saw them tour in Austria, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Denmark.
Noriana Kennedy is one of the prominent voices in the West’s thriving American folk scene. In 2006 Noriana she travelled to Virginia and recorded an E.P with Irish/U.S band Sawyer Hollow. It was here she found her love for oldtime and bluegrass, and began to explore the connections between the Irish and Appalachian traditions. With Sawyer Hollow she went on to perform in the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C and the Blueridge Bluegrass Festival.
In 2009, Noriana founded five piece Americana band Mad Uncle Harry in Galway. They gained large much praise for their toe-tapping and warm folk excursions, and were invited to perform at the Dunmore East Bluegrass Festival, The Sixmilebridge Music Festival. Now, Noriana’s musical journey has culminated in the recording of Ebb ‘N’ Flow, which brings some of the finest musicians on the scene together.
Guests include Cleek Schrey and Stephanie Coleman, a great oldtime fiddling duo from the American east coast. Trevor Hutchinson (The Waterboys, Lunasa) plays double bass and was also the album’s producer. Up and coming singer songwriter Christof Van Der Ven adds some pitch-perfect harmonies. New Zealander Gerry Paul (from Grada and the Two Oceans Trio, with Tim O’Brien) adds some tasty guitar parts. Breton flutist Sylvain Barou was also part of the sessions, as was Bill Whelan from the Rough Deal String Band. Fiddler Sean Regan features, and Sharon Shannon adds her distinctive, accordion flourish.
Noriana is based in Galway City. Ebb ‘N’ Flow marks the first assured steps into what promises to be a long journey along folk’s storied path.
