The Newcastleton Traditional Music Festival is probably the longest continuously running music festival in Scotland.
Founded in 1969, the festival revolves around a series of competitions, dances, organised ceilidhs (where singing and dance go hand in hand!) and the famous sing arounds, as well as fantastic sessions throughout the village. Not to mention the ‘Riding Out’ on the Saturday, which instead of horseback you can see 20 – 30 peculiarly dressed locals on bikes, riding round the village taking to ‘word out’ they have even been known to arrive on bikes in the Village Hall to start the concert on the Saturday night.
One of the most popular events is the Grand Winners’ Concert on Saturday night, featuring the best of the day’s competitions interspersed with attending musicians, as it is awash with talented musicians from far and wide who attend the festival every year. Bringing together both sides of the Border in harmony of music and song.
In recent years, the Friday night concert in the local Kirk has become very popular – completely acoustic, this wonderful church lends itself to carry the voice and is a must. The whole village takes part and are very welcoming to retuning and new festival goers, infact over the years some have never gone home!
So if you are between 0 and 99 years young come along to this very welcoming and traditional festival in beautiful rural surroundings in this historic village.
