On Liz’s Festival Fling this Saturday 21 December between 2.00 and 4.00pm is a summer concert to brighten up our winter days with the dynamic dynamo that is Brian MacNeill.
With over 40 years on the folk scene as a performer, composer, producer, teacher, musical director, band leader, novelist and interpreter of Scotland’s past , present and future – luckily for us he’s not been idle. He is not so much a one man band, but an orchestra playing fiddle, octave fiddle, guitars, mandocello , bouzouki, mandolin, cittern, doubleneck mandocello, viola, concertina, bass and hurdy and that other wonderful instrument – the voice!
The founder member of the renowned and much loved Battlefield Band, launched out into not only a ‘solo’ career but toured with the cream of Scottish talent such as Dick Gaughan, Clan Alva, Kavana, McNeill, Lynch & Lupari, Martin Hayes, Natalie MacMaster, Fesat of Fiddles and of course Iain MacKintosh.
His songwriting is legendary and covered and recorded by many a renowned artists and musicians, with songs such as ‘No Gods and Precious Few Heros’, ‘Strong Women Rule Us All With Their Tears’, ‘ The Yew Tree , ‘The Snows of France and Holland’, Any Mick’ll Do and of course ‘The Lads O’ The Fare’ about his home town of Falkirk!
When Brian McNeill wrote The Lads O’ The Fair way back over 30 years ago, little would he have believed that in 2012 his home town of Falkirk would bestow the accolade of having some of the wonderful lyrics etched in Caithness stone high above the town on a magnificent view point on the Policy Bing ‘ Stand Here and I’ll show ye – there’s the toon below ye’ .
I caught up with Brian after Tonder Festival, when he returned from USA and before he took of from Germany! And will play you the interview after the concert which was recorded at The Stonehaven Folk Festival – Liz.
