Some of the greatest traditional artists in the world are in Derry-Londonderry this week as part of the show-stopping programme of events for Fleadh Cheoil 2013.
Visitors to this year’s Fleadh are experiencing history in the making from 11 – 18 August with exclusive world class collaborations from a dream team of performers including The Poet and the Piper, Cara Dillon accompanied by the Orchestra of Ireland, Dervish, Flook, Beoga, Tim Edey, Brendan Power, Liz Carroll, Tim Eriksen, The Campbells, Lorcán Mac Mathuna, and dance spectacular Take the Floor.
Often described as the “olympics of traditional music”, the Fleadh is funded by the City Of Culture, Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Reconciliation Fund and Department for Social Development. It features competitions in traditional music, concerts and events and attracts over 300,000 people each year. 2013 will be the first time the Fleadh Cheoil will have been held in Northern Ireland in its 60 year history.
Fleadh 2013 Chairperson Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh said this was a once in a lifetime chance to see some amazing performers: “The Fleadh in Derry this year is a first and has been described many times as historic and groundbreaking. We have worked very hard to bring together artists that reflect that and we hope that with the eyes of the world on Derry this year we can celebrate the very best of Irish culture.”
Celtic Music Radio will capture the atmosphere of the All Ireland Fleadh as Gordon, Alex and Joan will be based at St Columb’s Hall, Orchard Street, Derry which is one of the busiest venues of the Fleadh.
