Billed as an ‘instrumental supergroup’, KAN consists of Aidan O’Rourke on fiddle, Brian Finnegan on flutes/whistle, Ian Stephenson on guitar and Jim Goodwin on drums. There is no-one who actually leads the group and they all take it turn to play tunes suitable to the instruments they play.
I was unsure of the drums, as the one thing I have noticed more this year at CC gigs, are the amount of performances where drums have now been on stage, and on most occasions overpower the more delicate stringed instruments, which they accompany. With the first set of jigs and reels I began to think that this would be another example however as the gig progressed, the drums did fit in nicely with the tunes.
They played a variety of tunes some from their debut album in 2012 – ‘Sleeper‘ including the opening track on it called ‘One Two Three’.
Whilst I enjoyed the gig, I personally think to advertise them as a supergroup was a bit of a misnomer!
