If 2020 has taught us anything … when an opportunity arises, we must put on our mask, grab it with sanitised hands and run with it.
That’s exactly what actor Blythe Duff (Taggart, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and Cameron Barnes (Singer/songwriter, Red Hot Chilli Pipers) did when the airplay controversy surrounding the well-loved rollicking Christmas song Fairytale of New York drifted on.
Blythe met Cameron while playing mother and son in the National Theatre of Scotland’s ground breaking ‘The James Plays’ which premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival and landed at London’s National Theatre in 2014.
Blythe was hugely impressed with Cammy’s stunning voice and musicality. Cammy’s gran, Margaret, was delighted her grandson was being kept in tow by the woman from Taggart!
With such a unique on-stage mother/son relationship, the couple realised that their chemistry would make recording the song an emotional reunion for them both.
The talented Scott Wood and Mhairi Marwick were the icing on the Christmas cake. The couple brought their own creativity and musical talents to the studio with exquisite string, piano, whistle and percussion work and Scott’s producing skill was a joy to behold. Throw in Cammy’s day job as a Red Hot Chilli Piper and the fairytale was complete. The talent and speed at which they could transform this beautiful song was as thrilling as it was emotional.
With all profits going to freelance creatives and their families, the Fairytale continues…
Story of the film
Single mum Christina Chalmers or Chrissy (as she was known in her heyday) is living her life vicariously through her multi-talented musician son Guy. She’s encouraged him to leave Glasgow and follow in her footsteps to seek his fortune in New York City.
It hasn’t worked.
A global pandemic has sapped his creative energy, but more importantly the money has run out. His online betting hasn’t helped.
He’s had to come home.
How can he break the news that both their dreams have failed?
