Greentrax Recordings – Top Scottish Singers and Musicians – Album Of The Week

Written by on July 10, 2021

Our Album of the Week this week celebrates the 35th anniversary of the excellent Greentrax Recordings.
Greentrax Recordings – Top Scottish singers and musicians – is an 18-track compilation, first released in 1989 as a showcase for the then-fledgling label, went on to be a bestseller.

It recently went out of print and is now been re-released on the label’s Celtic Collections budget series and it is anticipated it will prove to be a popular purchase for both tourists and folk enthusiasts alike.

It is very much a sample of the very best of Scottish music and song and has not dated in any way.

The tracks were carefully chosen and represent some of the top singers and musicians from Scotland. On this new version, a bonus track has been added: Ceolbeg (The Sleeping Tune), in memory of the late, hugely talented piper and composer Gordon Duncan.

This is regarded as one of his many masterpieces and is played here by Ceolbeg, a favourite Greentrax band over many years.

The front cover is worth a mention as well – a stunning sunset over Linlithgow Palace and loch, where Mary Queen of Scots was born.

The album was re-mastered by Peter Haigh at Edinburgh’s Pier House Studios.
