He came from Portland town to Europe in 1957 at the request of Ramplin’ Jack Elliott bringing his style of 5 string banjo playing, his baritone voice and his stories to enthrall audiences throughout the UK and the wider world in the emerging folk scene hungry for a ‘new’ sound. Derroll stayed on in Europe and settled in Belgium in 1958.
Derroll became a trail blazer for the 5 string banjo as well as bringing the style of a ‘total’ concert where his delivery of the tale about the song and it’s melody entertained and held an audience in it’s spell. He stated that ‘ each song has to become mine before I sing it’ which was very apparent if you had been fortunate enough to have attended a concert and hopefully will be relayed to you when you listen to this recording.
His songs have been recorded by Jack Elliott / Jan Baez / Marianne Faithfull / Colin Wilkie and Shirley Hart / Hot Vulture / CCCInc / Arlo Guthrie / Vera Coomans/ Tom Thenus/ The Avett Brothers / Cara Luft / Lady Maisery – to name but a few!
Liz Clark met up with her friend Danny Adams, Derroll’s wife also their daughter Rebecca, at the Tønder Festival and talked about Derroll and theses wonderful recording and are pleased and honoured to bring this recording to fans of Derroll as well as to a new generation.
