Liz Clark presents Umoja Gaelica this week’s featured CD Album of the Week. Umoja Gaelica is a fusion of African/American spiritual music and Scottish/Irish traditional music featuring Lea Gilmore with a full gospel choir alongside Sean O’Rourke, Jim Dowers, Lynne Toker, Eric Bird and Frank Maguire.
The shared experiences of discrimination, displacement and exploitation expressed within each of the cultures are brought together.
Liz spoke to some of the performers involved when this impressive show played at the St Andrews-in-the-Square venue, Glasgow on 22 February 2011.
‘Umoja’ is Swahili for ‘unity’ and the ‘Gaelica’ component of the project has Lea Gilmore joining a dozen or so Scottish and Irish musicians, interweaving her programme of classic freedom songs with traditional tunes. The show and CD has the slogan ‘Uniting the world one song at a time.’
