First concert for me this year at Celtic Connections and what a brilliant one to begin with. Yet again the hall was filled to capacity with people standing around the balcony at the top. Added to that, were the many cameras around the auditorium as the concert was being filmed by BBC Alba.
Lights dimmed as the 10 members of Capercaillie came on stage and the distinct, dulcet voice that can only be Karen Matheson, opened the evenings entertainment. Its hard to believe that the group have been around now for 30 years and this was an anniversary concert not to be missed!
A couple of the songs at the start, came from the pen of the poet Angus McNicol and among the many guests on stage were Julie Fowlis, Sineag MacIntyre and Kathleen MacInnes as well as Darren McLean and Kris Drever. Some of the songs included in the show were the title track from their latest album At the Heart Of It All, Skye Waulking Song, Outlaws, Both Side of Tweed and Abu Chuibhl (The Spinning Song)
Interspersed with this, was the group itself led by Donald Shaw, with some lively jigs and reels including Cape Breton Reels, Bulgarian Red Reels and Dr.MacPhails Reels which by the end of the evening, had everyones feet and hands tapping and clapping whilst some at the front of the auditorium were up dancing too.
A wonderful night of entertainment culminating in a well deserved standing ovation for the band and all of its guests at the end.
