When Blazin’ Fiddles come to town you know you are in for a fantastic night. On this emotionally charged evening Blazin’ Fiddles almost brought the roof in as they played like never before.
Earlier in the week it was announced that two of the founder members of this wonderful band were leaving after 15 years together. Alan Henderson and Iain MacFarlane have decided to move onto other projects. When this news broke a very special night was promised and was definitely delivered.
If there is another band that can exude so much fun and humour on stage whilst playing to such exacting standards then I have yet to see them.
This evening had absolutely everything: reels, Strathspeys, jigs, slow airs and classical tunes all delivered to perfection. It also had Alan Henderson breaking a fiddle string for the first time in his 15 year span with the band and on his final performance. You just couldn’t write the script.
When most of the band left the stage leaving Alan and Iain playing a set on their own, there was hardly a dry eye in the house.
On the bands return there was a number of surprises and presentations for the departing duo. There was also the surprise return of former band members and the introduction of new band member Rua MacMillan. What a line up that proved to be with an exhilarating set played by them all.
This concert will go down as one of the highlights of Celtic Connections 2014, but the night belonged to two people – Alan Henderson and Iain MacFarlane. You will be sadly missed guys.
