The Celtic Music Radio Album of the Week commencing Saturday 28 June is the brand new CD from Greenock band Ten Gallon Bratz with a album called Tales from the Long Shadows. Danny Matheson talks to Barrie and Mick from the band about their music and their new CD album.
Ten Gallon Bratz began with Mark Dunsmore and Barrie Kelly back in the early 1990s. After amassing a substantial and ever-growing body of work they decided to form a band to showcase the songs. Ten Gallon Bratz exists in two forms, a three-piece acoustic band and a full blown five-piece band.
To date, the band has produced a number of demo CDs. Their initial thirteen track acoustic CD entitled “Ghost Stories” generated a great deal of interest in the band which provided the necessary impetus to go on and record their second album “The Wilderness” in 2011.
The Wilderness, which was partly recorded at Riverside Studios by Duncan Cameron, (notable for his work with the likes of Travis and Trash Can Sinatras) is a mixture of acoustic and full band tracks. The Wilderness is available from iTunes, Amazon, spotify and many other digital download sites or is available on CD by sending the guys an email.
The continued and growing interest in Ten Gallon Bratz and the prolific nature of their songwriting, led in 2014 to the guys booking some more studio time to record the next batch of songs. This time, they were looking for a relaxed, informal, setting to record their now familiar mix of full band and acoustic songs. It didn’t take long for the guys to book time with renowned producer Mark Freegard in his intimate and inimitable Kyoti Studios in Glasgow, the outcome of which, is their latest offering “Tales From The Long Shadows”.
Ten Gallon Bratz music is broadly based in the Americana tradition where glorious three part harmonies are seamlessly combined with infectious hooks and intelligent lyrics. The band in general continues to increase its fan base due to a growing reputation for memorable songs combined with entertaining live shows.
