Album of the Week – Ross Ainslie ‘Pool’

Written by on November 23, 2024

From his roots in traditional piping to composer of world music Ross Ainslie has created a formidable body of work and he’s strengthened it with Pool, his sixth solo release.

Ross, who is widely admired for his solo and work with orchestras, said the 12-track collection is the last in a series of three albums he calls the ‘Journey Albums’ – the first was 2017’s Sanctuary with the second, Vana coming out in 2020.

He performs regularly with bands such as Treacherous Orchestra, Salsa Celtica and for Pool he recruited his usual collaborators The Sanctuary Band, featuring Steve Byrnes (guitar and drums); James Lindsay (bass and moog); Hamish Napier (keys); Greg Lawson (fiddle); Paul Towndrow (sax); James Mackintosh (drums and percussion) plus new recruit, Paul Jennings (congas and drums).

Ross, who has a busy Celtic Connections’ schedule, will be chatting on the Album of the Week Show with Liz Clark – aka Auntie Liz – at midday today.
