Album of the Week – Lewis McLaughlin ‘A Hope In Fear’

Written by on October 26, 2024

For his second album, Glasgow-based Lewis McLaughlin is venturing into uncharted sonic territories, crafting a daring and audacious soundscape that remains true to his narrative-driven songwriting style.

Working again with long term collaborator Andy Monaghan(Frightened Rabbit), ‘A Hope In Fear’ delves deeper into themes of self-discovery and resilience.

The band, featuring Lewis and Euan McLaughlin on guitars; Donald Barker (keys and vocals); Chloë Bryce (fiddle and vocals); Finlay Johnston (bass and vocals) and Steven Stark on drums, gives the music a dynamic and cohesive sound.

Lewis said: “I wanted this album to capture the raw energy of our live performances.

“We recorded it over a few intense weeks, allowing the band’s musical expertise to shine through.”

Lewis – he began writing songs in secret at the age of 14 and released his debut album two years ago – won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition in 2022 with his song Summer, which has caught the attention of stars such as Coldplay’s Chris Martin and George Ezra.

He will be in conversation on the Album of the Week Show today with Liz Clark aka Auntie Liz at midday.
