Album of the Week – Elspeth Cowie ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes’

Our first Album of the Week for 2024 is ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes’ by Elspeth Cowie, a well-known a Scottish traditional singer who recently appeared at Celtic Connections as part of Scots Women – Generations o’ Change.

Elspeth started singing as a child and won a prize for performing songs by Robert Burns. Later, having moved to Glasgow, she was the buyer of blues and jazz records for an indie store and sung in social clubs, covering whatever the band wanted.

Moving to Aberdeen, discovering a local folk club and Lizzie Higgins, ignited an interest in the ‘muckle sangs’ that would develop into a passion. When she moved to Edinburgh, she joined the band Seannachie and released two albums.

Then as a solo singer she released her mostly unaccompanied album, ‘Naked Voice’ in 2000. She also co-founded the vocal trio Chantan which blended folk, blues and jazz influences. They released one album, ‘Colours.’

Now living in Spain, Elspeth has put out her second solo album. It’s an eclectic mix of favourites that reflect her folk, blues, and jazz influences.

Today, Elspeth will be chatting with Hugh Taylor on the Album of the Week Show, starting at midday.
