YET another living legend’s billed for Milngavie folk club this month which hosts New York-born Tom Paley at the The Fraser Centre (Douglas Street) on Saturday May 18. Doors 7.30pm and tickets £12 via Milngavie Bookshop or Art Forum, Station Road.
An early convert to traditional music, Tom began playing guitar and five-string banjo, performed in a duo with Woody Guthrie then created the New Lost City Ramblers , with Mike Seeger and John Cohen, which generated great interest in the traditional string band music of the American rural south.
Later came the short-lived Old Reliable String Band (with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose) before Paley spent the early 60s in Sweden before moving to England, where he has lived and worked since 1965.
Banjo and guitar are still Tom’s main instruments and American old-time music still makes up the bulk of his performance material, but Swedish fiddle music ranks equally high in his affections.
